Indigenous Jumper Launch

The launch of our inaugural Indigenous Jumper Design in 2024 marked a celebration of culture and community.  This collaborative project reflects the rich heritage, stories, and values of Aboriginal culture, blending the history of our club with the deep connection to the land and water.

The design process, led by Noongar Yamatji artist Sharon Wood-Kenney, involved cultural immersion workshops with members, life members, and the wider community. Together, we explored Indigenous art, symbols, and stories, creating a jumper that tells a meaningful narrative.

The workshops also introduced participants to the six Noongar seasons (Birak, Bunuru, Djeran, Makaru, Djilba, and Kambarang), the spirit woman Charnok of Joondalup Mooro Boodjar, and tools used for hunting and survival. We delved into the significance of tapping sticks and even tried the didgeridoo.

Key Design Elements of our Indigenous Jumper:

  • Waterways: Representing the connection to lakes and beaches, symbolizing the traditional journeys to collect food and resources.
  • Djinda Star: A guiding star located at the top left of the design, symbolizing hope, connection to ancestors, and the role of astronomy in First Nations science.
  • Moorditj Bidi (Strong Pathway): Circles and pathways on the jumper represent the collective journey of families, committee members, life members, umpires, and all club members.
  • Wargul (Rainbow Serpent): The Wargul embodies the Aboriginal creation story, forging pathways for others to follow.

This jumper is more than a piece of football gear—it’s a tribute to cultural education, pride, and respect for Aboriginal traditions and the land. It symbolizes a shared journey and celebrates what makes our club unique.

Special thanks to the Telstra Footy Country Grants and City of Joondalup for their generous support of this initiative.
